USDOT and MC numbers are not for sale. FMCSA will kill the number if you rent it

What the notice actually said

Facebook offered a rented MC. FMCSA’s line is brighter than the ad: a USDOT number identifies a legal person forever — not sold, transferred, rented, or leased.

Operating authority moves only in a legitimate corporate transaction with continuing management control. Discovery of a street sale means inactivate the USDOT number and revoke related registrations — 31134 safety registration and 13901–13905 authority.

ICC-era authority used to be a scarce permit you could assign. Congress ended that scarcity. Treating an MC like a parking pass is how hostage freight and chameleon carriers work. FMCSA’s notice is the bright line.

A “lease the authority” Facebook ad is a federal problem, not a growth hack. We will not put 875229 on someone else’s door for a fee.

Chameleon carrier is industry slang for reincarnating under a new number after a shutdown — the behavior this notice is aimed at. A corporate merger is a lawyer conversation, not a dispatch handshake.

What it changes on Monday
