FMCSA tightened how ELDs get on the registered list. Shop the list, not the Facebook ad
FMCSA tightened ELD registration so revoked devices cannot sneak back onto the list; shop that list, keep the identifier, skip the Facebook ad.

What “streamlined vetting” actually added to the list
An owner-operator walks in with a brand-new logger still in the shrink wrap and a receipt from a Facebook ad. The first question is not the price. It is whether the identifier is on eld.fmcsa.dot.gov/List. That question got sharper when FMCSA overhauled how vendors get on the list in the first place.
FMCSA described a complete overhaul of registration. Initial review covers contacts, specifications, and device images. Fraud detection cross-checks against active, inactive, revoked, and in-process applications. Then the file is sorted into Category 1–4, from approved to denied.
The agency’s own diagnosis of the old system: it was too easy to register non-compliant hardware or to re-register something that had already been pulled. That produced a cycle of revocations and forced replacements — the bill landing on the motor carrier, not on the clone shop. “Streamlined” here means a harder gate, not a faster rubber stamp.
This June note is the upstream file. The August 6 bulletin that pulled five devices is the downstream file. Read them together, but do not collapse them: one is how a vendor gets on the list, the other is five identifiers that came off it. Confirm both on FMCSA.gov before you write a purchase order.
How to buy an ELD without buying a second one in 60 days
Open the registered list. Match the identifier in the device to the identifier on the list. If a salesperson cannot show you that row, you are not buying an ELD. You are buying a problem for the next revocation cycle — the kind we wrote up after August 6 pulled five devices with an October 6 swap deadline.
If a salesperson cannot show you that row on the registered list, you are not buying an ELD. You are buying a problem for October.
A tougher vendor process does not change your logger tomorrow unless your current unit gets revoked. Check the identifier anyway. Logging software can satisfy the mandate only if that product is on the registered list and you still meet 395.22. Do not assume you are exempt because you “mostly” stay inside 150 air-miles; short-haul is limited, and a Facebook ad is not an exception.
This does not change a shipper rate. It changes whether a lease-on truck can leave Lake Bluff. If you are tendering to us, you get Motive on company power. If you are bringing your own box, dispatch and safety will ask for the identifier before the first load — same phone as the quote desk.
Fleet standard — the truck is the company, and so is the log
We are not going to put a $199 no-name unit in a 2026 Volvo so a lease driver can “save money.” The truck is the company. The log is the company. OO onboarding includes that conversation, and it is not a debate about box art.
What we will not do is dispatch a partner whose identifier is not on the live list, or wait for a vendor to “get recertified” while a truck sits on our authority. What we will do is check eld.fmcsa.dot.gov/List, match the identifier, and say no if the row is missing.
Dispatch and safety confirm ELD on a partner truck before it is dispatched: +1 (847) 702-8181. Company seats already have Motive in the cab — start at Drive With Us if that is the simpler file. Confirm the live list and 395.22 on FMCSA.gov; this page is how we buy a logger, not legal advice.
Short glossary
The jargon, in the order it showed up — no extra theory.
- Registered ELD list
- The only catalog that satisfies the federal mandate; marketing sites and Facebook ads are not the list.
- Revoked device
- A device FMCSA has pulled from the registered list; using it after the grace period is treated as having no ELD.

FAQ
Does a tougher vendor process change my ELD tomorrow?
Only if your current unit gets revoked. Check the identifier against the live list; the June overhaul is about new vendor applications, not a mass swap.
Can I use logging software instead of a hardware ELD?
Only if that product is on the registered list (many are) and you still meet 395.22. Software that is not on the list is not an ELD.
Short-haul exception?
Limited. Do not assume you are exempt because you “mostly” stay inside 150 air-miles; confirm 395.22 and the exception you think you have.
Who at PRIDEUSA confirms ELD on a partner truck?
Dispatch and safety, before the truck is dispatched. Call +1 (847) 702-8181 and have the identifier ready.
